Las Vegas is commonly known for it's nightclubs, shows and casinos, but there are actually plenty of activities in Vegas that are family-friendly and located on and off the strip. Whether you're in the mood to spend the morning hiking in the desert, attending an educational program in a local museum or planning a picnic at a farmers market, there are number of things to do.

Bike Tours

Visit the sites and get some exercise at the same time while participating in a guided bike tour of Las Vegas. There are a number of tours available in the city that take you to the Mojave Desert where you can view the wildlife and try mountain biking, or you can tour and ride around Lake Mead. Tours range between two to four hours. Most bicycles may be rented for up to one day. Some tour companies do have a minimum age requirement.

Hiking

Located just outside of the city limits of Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers and those interested in taking in the panoramic views of the Mojave Desert. Guided hikes are held throughout the year. Children can participate in craft projects and learn about the wildlife and vegetation in the area through the park's educational programs. If you're interested in staying more local, head over to the Springs Preserve where you can stroll through the gardens and hike on the the one and one-half mile trail that wanders out into the Mojave Desert.

Farmers Markets

If planning a picnic or interested in fresh organic food, stroll over to one of the three farmers markets located in Las Vegas. Stop by the artisan stations and purchase handmade baskets and beaded necklaces and bracelets from local vendors. Throughout the summer, various events and craft programs are held for younger children at each of the markets. The Las Vegas Farmer's Market is sponsored by local businesses.

Golfing

Get some sun, practice your golf swing and admire the panoramic views of the Las Vegas Strip at one of the public 18-hole golf courses. Many golf courses provide driving ranges and putting areas where you can practice before you tee off. If you're not a resident of Las Vegas or forgot your clubs, stop by the club's pro shop where rentals and club repairs are available. Most clubs provide locker rooms and a restaurants located on site where you can reminisce about the game and relax with your favorite beverage. Many golf courses require an advance tee time.

Zoos and Aquariums

Located on South Las Vegas Boulevard and open daily, the Lion Habitat at MGM Grand consists of more than 30 lions. You can walk around the grounds while learning about the lion's diet, view a feeding session with one of the trainers and sit in on trainer-led programs. A one-mile-walkway, the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay provides more than 1,000 species for viewing. Walk through the aquarium designed like a sunken ship as sharks and exotic fish swim around you. An audio tour is available in multiple languages and naturalists are located throughout the property with additional information if necessary.
