Situated in southern Nevada, Las Vegas is a fun place to go on Halloween. The city has a number of exciting activities for adventurous travelers, from hiking and racing, to hunting for ghosts. When you visit Las Vegas on Halloween, you’re bound to heighten any adventure with a healthy dose of dramatic scenery and over-the-top spectacles staged along the Strip.
Ghost Tour
Venture on a ghost tour for a look at the darker, scarier side of Las Vegas. The company Haunted Vegas Tours offers a guided tour following the footsteps of Bugsey Siegel, Liberace and Elvis. In true Las Vegas fashion, it also includes a show. According to the creator of Haunted Vegas Tours, Las Vegas has 21 documented places with paranormal activity.
Run
In the spirit of fright-induced fun, why not preface the all night party with a race? The Fleet Feet Sports Race Series hosts the Scream 5k run or 1-mile walk on October 30. All participants receive a medal, which would compliment a superhero costume. Competitive events will vary depending on the year. The 2010 Pumpkinman Triathalon is held in Las Vegas, when the water temperature is still about 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Most race events are accompanied with food, music and a race expo.
Swim
Energize yourself for Halloween night with a swim in the hotel pool. Many hotels either have indoor or heated pools, or they don’t close them until November. When you go to Las Vegas in October, note that Bally’s heated pool will still be open without lifeguards, and Caesar’s pools are open year-round. The following year-round hotel pools are heated at 78 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit: Excalibur, the Flamingo Hotel and the Four Seasons.
Eat local food
Thanks to childhood trick-or-treating, Halloween is synonymous with candy for many people. Load up on seasonal fruits and vegetables at the Las Vegas Farmer’s Market, and sweets won’t be nearly as tempting. The market is open at Gardens Park on Tuesdays and Bruce Trent Park on Wednesdays. The market hosts fall harvest events and offers special Halloween crafts for the holiday.
Walk on the wild side
While plenty of masked goblins parade down the Strip in all of the glory, stop by the Mandalay Bay Hotel for a look at something truly scary. Over 2,000 fish, sharks, sea turtles, golden crocodiles and piranhas live in the hotel’s Shark Reef. Guests can stand close enough to have a diver’s view of sharks that measure over 18 feet. The Mandalay Bay is located on Las Vegas Boulevard near Hacienda Avenue.
