Camping Around Wells, Nevada

The small town of Wells, Nevada, got its start when the Central Pacific Railroad laid tracks in the area in the mid-1800s. Nowadays, the town makes a great base camp from which to explore the area with plenty of campgrounds for RVers and tenters to rejuvenate and relax after a day of hiking, horseback riding or fishing.

Location

Wells is located in northeastern Nevada, about 340 miles from Reno. Located in Elko County among the Ruby and Humboldt Mountains, the town is situated at the headwaters of the Humboldt River. To reach the area, take U.S. Highway 93 or Interstate Highway 80.

Private Campgrounds

Several private campgrounds offer RV campers all the amenities including Angel Lake RV Park. The campground offers full hookups, a shower house with restrooms, wireless Internet access and cable television. Mountain Shadows RV Park offers both tent and RV campsites including some pull-through sites. The sites include full hookups, cable television and a shower house with restrooms. You’ll also find a laundry facility on site. Both campgrounds offer close access to Angel Lake for hiking and fishing for bass and wild trout.

Public Campgrounds

The Ruby Mountains Ranger District in nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest offers a variety of campsites ideal for tenters and RVers who do not need hookups. Thomas Canyon Campground offers 30 tent pads and four pull-through sites. The campground features no-flush toilets and drinking water. Angel Lake Campground also offers 26 paved sites with tent pads. The campground offers drinking water and vault toilets. Access to the Greys Lake trail head starts near Angel Lake campground.

Activities

Angel Lake, located 15 miles from Wells, offers boating, kayaking and fishing as well as wildlife watching opportunities for mountain goats, bighorn sheep and antelope. Miles of trails in the Humboldt and Ruby Mountains in the national forest give hikers and horseback riders plenty of space to explore while enjoying a workout on the trail. With a hike into the higher mountain lakes, anglers can fish for the rare tiger trout. In Wells, the city park offers additional amenities for outdoor fun including a kid’s swing and jungle gym, a swimming pool and several soccer, baseball and football fields along with horseshoe pit and basketball and tennis courts. Or, you can play a round of golf at the nine-hole Chimney Golf Course in Wells.

Preparation

Temperatures get very warm in Wells during the summer, so make sure to carry plenty of water and sunscreen when hiking or enjoying other outdoor activities. If you plan to fish in the area, you’ll need a Nevada State fishing license, available at bait shops in Wells. If you need to stock up, a grocery store and pharmacy in Wells provide some supplies.
