Things to Do in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

The area around Wrightsville Beach features miles of white sand and warm waters, an ideal location for the active traveler. This city is designed to keep you up, moving and enjoying the fresh Atlantic Ocean breeze. Spend a day learning to surf or exploring the local marshlands. No matter what you do, it will not be difficult to remain active from sunrise to sunset in Wrightsville Beach.

Run

If you are looking for a place to go for a run around Wrightsville Beach, head over to the John Nesbitt Loop, which locals refer to as simply "The Loop." This 2.5-mile trail provides you with coastal views and crosses over the water via three bridges and then winds down through the downtown Wrightsville Beach area. If you are looking for a longer run, Greenfield Lake, in neighboring Wilmington has a 4.3-mile long path. There are restrooms and water fountains along the trail.

Fishing

Take in the coastal sights around Wrightsville Beach upon one of the boats in Reel Adventure Charter’s fleet. Head out for a half day or whole day with Captain Matt Wirt to fish for red drum, cobia, flounder, king mackerel, mahi mahi or trout. No fishing license is required and all bait, rods, tackle and reels are included in the cost. A half-day costs $300 and a whole day is $500. Both costs are for a total of three people.

Surfing

When arriving at Wrightsville Beach, you will notice the relatively calm surf-able wave break just off the beach. Spend a day with the instructors from Indo Jax Surf School learning to ride these waves. Indo Jax Surf School offers lessons for individuals of all levels in both a group and private setting. Additionally, Indo Jax Surf School rents surfboards, paddleboards and boogey boards.

Kayak

It would be difficult to find a better way to explore the coastline of Wrightsville Beach than atop a kayak. At Hook, Line & Paddle, you can rent recreational, touring and surfing kayaks. This company is located across from Blockade Runner Beach Resort. In addition to kayaks, Hook, Line & Paddle rents standup paddleboards and Hobie Cat sailboats. The Hook, Line & Paddle outfitters provide guided tours out to Shark Island, up Dawson’s Creek, and along the Black River.

Eco-Tours

The area around Wrightsville Beach is an outdoor enthusiast's dream destination. Here you can explore a variety of natural habitats in the Lower Cape Fear area. Spend a few hours out on a tour with Captain Joe, the Cape Fear Naturalist, for an up-close tour of this region. Tours can be taken on a catamaran, by foot or on a sea kayak. When out on the tours, you will explore the diverse marshlands around Wrightsville Beach. Expect to see a variety of birds including woodpeckers, sandpiper, plovers and Black Night Herons.
