Overview

Dandruff is a harmless, yet sometimes embarrassing condition in which the scalp itches and flakes skin. People with all skin types--dry, oily or a combination of the two--can develop dandruff. Dandruff is not contagious and does not necessarily mean a person is not clean, though sometimes infrequent hair washing can be a cause of the condition. Medicated shampoos and lifestyle adjustments can help eliminate dandruff.

Step 1

Wash your hair several times a week and even daily if you have a very oily scalp. Skin cells build up on the scalp and are removed with regular washing. Going too long without a good cleansing may cause the cells to shed in the form of dandruff.

Step 2

Use medicated shampoos to eliminate dandruff. Shampoos containing antifungal agents such as zinc pyrithione and Ketoconazole shampoos can help clear up any minor infections you may have on your scalp. Shampoos that include coal tar on the ingredient list can be effective in controlling dandruff and other causes for scalp-flaking. If one type of shampoo is not giving you the results you seek, try alternating formulas until you find a combination that works for you.

Step 3

Take an herbal approach to eliminating dandruff by using tea tree oil as a shampoo. Tea tree oil is a natural antibiotic and has antifungal properties as well. Rub a small amount of oil on your skin, and wait a day before using it on your scalp to be sure you are not allergic to it. Many natural-food stores sell both the oil and ready-made shampoos with tea tree oil.

Step 4

Increase the amount of vitamin B6 in your diet. This nutrient is found in poultry; several types of fish including tuna, snapper and salmon; and spinach. Vitamin B6 is beneficial in reducing seborrheic dermatitis (the medical term for dandruff) and eczema. Take vitamin supplements if you do not eat chicken or fish.

Step 5

Reduce your stress, one of the known triggers of dandruff. Use yoga, deep breathing or other stress-management tools that work for you to get your stress under control.

Step 6

Catch some rays, in moderation, to help control and eliminate dandruff. According to the Mayo Clinic, small doses of sun can be beneficial to dandruff-sufferers. Remember to use sunscreen, even on your scalp, when you are outside in the full sun.
