While the Pocono Mountains in northeastern Pennsylvania might conjure up thoughts of heart-shaped bathtubs and honeymoon cabins, the area is not just a romantic getaway spot. There are miles and miles of scenic trails. Horseback riders, along with runners, cyclists, kayakers and all other nature lovers, will find beautiful woods, filled with streams, hills, waterfalls and lakes. Horseback riding is just one way to enjoy the fresh mountain air, wildlife and woodlands.
History
The word Pocono means the "stream between two mountains,” and in this region that refers to the Delaware River cutting through 2,400 square miles of woodland. Before the area became known as getaway destination, it was inhabited by the several Native American tribes, including the Iroquois and Shawnee. During World War II, it became a popular honeymoon and vacation destination with G.I.s on leave. Sprinkled throughout the mountains are bed and breakfasts that date back to Victorian times. Mom and Pop hotels, resorts and camp sites are plentiful. In more recent years, the area has become popular with golfers, as more than 35 courses in the four-county region have sprung up.
Types
Many privately owned riding stables offer horseback riding trips led by experienced trail guides. You'll be able to get on a horse, no matter what your experience level. Instruction is usually given in reining, body positions and horsemanship. Ponies are often available at stables for younger kids, usually below age 10. Gentle horses are always available for older beginners. The rides are usually geared towards a leisurely, pleasant ride done at an easy walk or jog pace, but the guides can accommodate more experienced riders, too.
Trails
Many horseback riding trails are located near stables or resorts. But there are trails found throughout the Poconos if you wish to hop on your own personal horse and ride. The trails of the Poconos range from heavily forested, such as the 14-mile Endless Mountains Riding Trail in Montrose, Penn., to the ridge and river valley trails in Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area in Bushkill, Penn. You can expect to see wild deer, turkey and other animals and birds as you travel through the Poconos. Sunset rides are particularly beautiful.
Features
In addition to horseback riding, many stables offer hay rides for anyone who doesn't want to get on a horse. Sleigh rides are often offered when snow is on the ground. Bonfires, weenie roasts, S'more parties and farm picnics are usually available, too, for those wanting to do more on the farm after the riding is over.
Considerations
Many stables and farms that offer horseback riding will have a minimum age requirement for children. Some will have maximum weight restrictions. Another rule may prohibit pregnant women. You generally will not be allowed to get on a horse if you are drinking alcohol. Reservations or appointments are usually required.
