Orange County, California offers active tourists many options, from beaches to parks to theme parks. Some of these activities, though, can involve a hefty price tag. For those who are budget-conscious as well as health-conscious, there are several tourist highlights that fit both criteria.
Nature
Orange County has several opportunities for visitors to explore nature for little to no cost. One of these is Centennial Farm. This working farm covers three acres and was created to educate visitors about agriculture. There are tours to view livestock and gardens full of vegetation. Admission and parking are free.
Parks
Parks offer a number of trails where outdoor enthusiasts can hike and mountain bike. Some larger parks with more extensive trails do charge for parking even if they do not charge admission. Orange County Park offers free activities such as balloon rides, concerts and dancing pavilions, and even free parking depending on the event. The Great Park Balloon lifts up to 30 passengers 500 feet into the air for a panoramic view. The ride is free, but there is a charge to park.
Beaches
Orange County beaches are popular, providing visitors numerous activities for no cost. You can bike, rollerblade, swim and play volleyball with your friends, all before you explore Huntington Beach Pier and Main Street. This provides an entire day's worth of entertainment and activities at virtually no charge. There are the tide pools at Dana Point as well as day hikes at Laguna Beach, and new surfers can test the tide at eco-friendly Bolsa Chica State Beach. While there are no fees to participate in activities, there can be fees to park at some of these locations.
Walking Tours
Lace up your best walking shoes and grab your pedometer for informative strolls through places such as Bowers Museum, which offers free admittance on Sundays, and Fullerton Arboretum, located at Cal State Fullerton. This 26-acre facility provides visitors educational tours through lush gardens and museums. There is limited free parking for visitors daily.
Art Walks
Another way to mix education, culture and activity at little to no cost is to enjoy the monthly art walks provided by several cities in Orange County. Laguna Beach holds its Art Walk the first Thursday of every month, so visitors can enjoy several different art galleries. This event even offers free wine and appetizers. Other cities such as Fullerton and Santa Ana host free art walks.
