In the document "Science of the Heart--Exploring the Role of the Heart in Human Performance", the HeartMath Institute says, "it was discovered that the heart also secretes oxytocin, commonly referred to as the love or bonding hormone...and is involved in the learning of social cues and the establishment of enduring pair bonds." Love makes you feel good, and San Diego is a beautiful city to share while also staying healthy and fit.
Beach Hikes
San Diego's beaches and bluffs like at Sunset Cliffs feature long stretches for running, jogging and bicycling. Taking the two-mile Bayside Trail up to Cabrillo National Monument and the Point Loma Lighthouse will invigorate your body while you share the views. Hike to the top of Mount Soledad for a view from on high of La Jolla and surrounds. Check with local Sierra Club organizers and meetups to get the local know-how. Take your flashlight if you go up late in the day for spectacular, panoramic sunsets.
Balboa Park
There are many trails around San Diego's beautiful Balboa Park for exploring, but the health-conscious person can spend hours walking or jogging throughout. Pick up a trail map at the park's visitor center, and head over to Florida Canyon for a challenging 6.8-mile hike that also has nice views of downtown. If you want to hone your mental muscles afterward, stop in at the Old Globe Theatre for a performance of Shakespeare.
The Del
The red turrets of the Hotel del Coronado provide a beautiful backdrop for lovers. Built in 1888, The Del rents out boogie boards, surfboards, and volleyballs for staying fit. Share a tandem bicycle to tour Coronado Island. There's also a swimming pool for laps, and you can rent your own private cabana between water aerobics exercising sessions.
Parasailing and Boats
The San Diego Adventure Center offers all kinds of activities, from horseback riding and kayaking to snorkeling and scuba diving. After taking part in one of these, you can fly a couple hundred feet above the Pacific, seated side by side with an X-2 tandem bar. The parasailing boat leaves several times a day. You can also rent boats and kayaks from many local businesses to head out onto Mission Bay.
Rock Climbing
Vertical Hold and Solid Rock all have indoor gyms in the San Diego vicinity. But you can also head to Mission Gorge, the oldest established rock climbing area in the county. The extremely hard, water-polished metamorphosed granite can be undertaken by beginners or more experienced climbers. Be sure to take extra water and regard the site's hours of operation, roughly 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
