Popcorn is one of those snacks that is naturally good for you. It is high in fiber and low in fat. However, it often is prepared in a manner that adds great amounts of fat, calories and sodium to it. Making healthy popcorn is simple, and while it can be prepared in a variety of ways, simple is always best. You don't have to buy a machine or anything else expensive because all the supplies and ingredients can be found in your kitchen. Making popcorn in the microwave is convenient, but store-bought popcorn is often unhealthy and full of chemicals. You can make popcorn in the microwave that is delicious, healthy economical.
Step 1
Measure 3 tbsp. of popcorn into the small dish. This dish will be used to combine all the ingredients and ensure that each kernel gets an even coat of oil, which is essential to good popcorn popping.
Step 2
Measure 2 tbsp. of olive oil into the small dish. Olive oil is a heart healthy oil and is high in monounsaturated fatty acids. Additionally, olive oil contains many antioxidant compounds known for their cancer-fighting properties. Don't worry about the fat because most of the oil is soaked up into the paper bag during the cooking process.
Step 3
Measure 1 tsp. of salt into the small dish. This is a small amount of salt that will flavor the popcorn better because it is added during cooking, which allows it to stick to the the popcorn better than if it is added afterward.
Step 4
Use the spoon to mix the ingredients together. Make sure the oil coats the popcorn kernels evenly.
Step 5
Pour the contents of the small dish into the paper bag. Ensure that the side with the bottom flap is facing up.
Step 6
Fold over the open end of the bag and put two staples in it.
Step 7
Place the bag into the microwave and set the timer for 3 minutes. It may need more time or less, just listen to the pops and when they begin to slow to one to two seconds between them, the popcorn is ready.
Step 8
Tear the bag open and pour the popcorn out. Enjoy fresh healthy popcorn.
