Hiking can burn up to 354 calories per hour, according to Shapefit. This number can be substantially higher if hiking up hills or carrying gear. The Smoky Mountains provide opportunities for hiking on rugged terrain or flat ground, so it is ideal for all fitness levels. Taking a hike in these mountains will allow you to have a sense of fun and adventure while at the same time maintaining a healthy weight.
Waterfalls
Fifteen trails in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park have waterfalls. The longest of these is Ramsay Cascades trail near Greenbrier, Tennessee. The shortest trail is Toms Branch Falls near the town of Cherokee, North Carolina. Other waterfall trails are Baskins Creek Falls, Rainbow Falls and Grotto Falls, which are all near Gatlinburg.
Streams
Eleven trails in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park run along streams. The longest of these is Chasteen Creek near Cherokee, North Carolina, This trail is around 10 miles round trip. The shortest is Oconaluftee River Trail, also near Cherokee. It is a three-mile round trip hike. Huskey Gap is near Elkmont, Tennessee, and features a stream, wildflowers and views of historical cottages.
Wildflowers
Seventeen trails are known for vibrant wildflower displays. The longest is Gregory Bald near Cades Cove, Tennessee, at 11.3 miles. The shortest is Schoolhouse Gap, also near Cades Cove. This trail is 3.8 miles long. Other wildflower trails include Brushy Mountain near Gatlinburg, Shuckstack near Fontana Village in North Carolina and Albright Grove near Greenbrier.
Hike Diffculties
Each trail is assigned a difficulty rating. The formula is basically one point for every 500 feet in elevation gain and an additional point for every mile of the trail. Trails with a score less than five are easy hikes, five to 10 is a moderate hike and anything rated higher than 10 is an advanced hike.
Weather
During the summer months, rain and thunderstorms may arise without warning. Hikers should have rain gear with them during these months. During the winter, temperatures are cold, especially in higher elevations, hikers should dress appropriately. Sunscreen is needed year round as is plenty of water. Hikers should dress in layers whenever possible to accommodate fluctuating temperatures.
Recommended Gear
In addition to wearing appropriate footwear and socks, hikers should also carry a few other items in their backpacks. These include a first aid kit, pocket knife, insect repellent and matches. A flashlight with extra batteries should be carried if hiking at night. Travelers may also wish to have a compass or GPS and a map.
Safety
Persons who hike in the Smoky Mountains should hike in groups. Letting someone know where you are and what time you will return as there is little cell phone coverage. Always stay on designated trails. Take breaks whenever needed and plan plenty of time so you will be able to fully enjoy your Smoky Mountain hiking experience.
