Camping provides opportunity for exercise and family time outdoors for people of all ages and interests. One of the great things about camping is that it can be rugged and rough, or toned-down and more relaxing. Cavendish Campground on Canada's Prince Edward Island, known for its red sandstone cliffs and sandy dunes, boasts white sand beaches, hiking trails and beautiful sunrises.

Campgrounds

Cavendish Campround on Prince Edward Island (PEI) offers amenities for campers including showers, toilets, a playground, kitchen shelters, laundry, as well as beach, hiking, canoeing and kayaking access. The campground beach is supervised and is for guests only. Fires are only allowed at certain sites, so when you book a reservation, be sure to specify if you'd like a fire pit at your campground. You can bring your pet as well. The campground also has a playground, planned tours and activities, sports fields and a pool. Guests must pay a park fee and a campground fee to stay at the camp.

There are a bundle of other campsites in the area, including Stanhope and Brackley. Further, for those interested in RV camping, there is a KOA campground which offers RV camping, tent camping and small cabins. It also has access to hiking and has free Wi-Fi, planned activities, tours, firewood and a swimming pool.

Beach Activities

Most campgrounds have full access to the beach. Some of the public beaches on PEI are supervised including Cavendish Beach, Stanhope Beach, North Rustico and Greenwich. Otherwise, there are miles and miles of white sand to enjoy. The beaches provide hours of entertainment for swimming, collecting shells, building sandcastles, playing games such as sand volleyball or Frisbee, or just relaxing.

Hiking

Miles of hiking trails are available from campgrounds, and you can also hike along the beaches or the dunes. If you decide to hike in the dunes, beware of vegetation and take care not to step on it in order to conserve the fragile environment. Other trails include the Macphail Nature Woods Trails, and trails in Prince Edward Island National Park and Bonshaw Provincial Park.

Outdoor Sports

Golf, biking and fishing are popular on PEI. There are a few golf courses, two of which are around Cavendish--Green Gables Golf Club and Eagles Glenn Golf Course. The main bike trail (the only trail which is for bikers--otherwise you will have to use the road) is Homestead Trail, which is on the north shore and offers views of the beach and the forest. It goes through salt marshes, forest and farmlands, and is appropriate for bikers of all experience levels as it covers varied terrain including grass, hard-packed dirt and gravel.

Fishing, Canoeing and Kayaking

You can also fish, canoe or kayak on the ponds of PEI and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, but don't expect to bring your motorboat because there are no motorized watercraft permitted. If you'd like to fish in ponds and streams, you must have a license, and be sure to investigate the national park regulations for fishing and boating.
