Located along the Ohio River, Cincinnati is a city steeped in history, culture and commerce. According to the University of Cincinnati, Winston Churchill called Cincinnati “America’s most beautiful inland city.” It has numerous entertainment, recreation and dining establishments along with large parks. One of the biggest recreational attractions the city has to offer is the Ohio River.
Attractions
The Ohio River is home to all forms of water sports, including skiing, fishing, boating and jet skiing. Located next to the Great American Ballpark, the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum houses 10 galleries with more than 500 objects, including three World Series trophies.
Walking Tours
The Cincinnati Preservation Association offers two-mile guided walking tours called Architreks, which highlight the historic architecture that can be found throughout the city. Architreks take about two hours and are available on the first and third Saturday from May through October. Architreks South highlights include Lytle Park, Traft Museum, Carew Tower, Lombardy Building, Dixie Terminal, Ingalls Building, Queen City Club, University Club and Guilford School. Highlights of the North Tour include City Hall, St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, Plum Street Temple, Piatt Park Complex, Hamilton County Courthouse and the Cincinnati Enquirer Building.
Trek the underground on the two-hour Queen City Underground: Breweries, Bosses and Burials Tour. There are a number of steps to climb on this tour, so it will provide a work out. It offers a rare view into the city’s past.
Bike
Cincinnati is making a concerted effort to become bicycle friendly. In June 2010, the city council announced a Bicycle Transportation Plan, which means over the next 15 years, the city will add an additional 330 miles of dedicated street lanes and 83 miles of new off-street bike paths.
Bicycles can be rented at Cinci Bike Rentals and bicycle parking racks are available in numerous locations, including indoor lots. Some bicycle lanes are already in use. Paths, lanes, laws and other information are all available online at Queen City Bike.
Day at the Park
Piatt Park, the city’s oldest park, is two blocks long and features shade, fountains, ponds, floral displays, seating for picnics, benches, seat-walls and Wi-Fi access. The park was donated to the city in 1817 by brothers John M. Piatt and Bejamin M. Piatt.
Exercise
Numerous golf courses surround Cincinnati. If you can’t travel to those, you can practice at Cinci City Links, an indoor golf and putting range. The Gym at Carew Tower has a full-service gym and offers one-day rates. The Cincinnati Athletic Club is a male-only club offering a 20-yard marble pool, cardio and strength training equipment, golf driving range, basketball and racquetball courts, suspended track, personal trainer, tanning bed, massage, whirlpool, and dry and steam saunas. Other facilities include Main Street Yoga, Pendleton Pilates, YMCA Health & Wellness Center and You Do Yoga.
Massage
Relieve stress at the Inner Peace Holistic Center. It offers Swedish, hot stone and Thai foot massages, energy work, reflexology, facials, waxing, classes and more. If you’re in pain, The Pain Release Center is focused on relieving chronic pain through massage therapies.
