There’s a little island on the southern tip of Alabama that the locals fondly refer to as “The Redneck Riviera.” Not many people even know that Alabama has beaches, much less an island. At one time, this island was a part of the mainland. Years ago it was dredged out and separated. Today, this 10-mile-long stretch of land is home to a couple prime camping spots and regularly beckons Alabamians from across the state and visitors from across the country.

Individually Owned Site Camping

Hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the main beaches, the back bay runs between the island and the mainland. Here, Heritage Motor Coach and Marina opened its doors in 2010.

The resort caters to Class “A” motor coaches and offers 79 sites that are individually owned. Each site has full hookups with a coach house. A walking trail runs through the center of the property.

The infinity edge pool design makes the water appear like it’s bubbling up as if it were a natural spring. A 3,000-square-foot clubhouse has a fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment and a grand room ready for socializing.

RV Camping

Luxury RV Resort sits right smack dab in the center of the city of Gulf Shores only a few miles from Orange Beach. The Gulf of Mexico is a short walk away. Restaurants, shopping, beaches and Wal-mart are within a mile or less. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail is just around the corner for biking, hiking or walking. The trail runs from the city of Gulf Shores to Orange Beach, which is approximately 5 miles of paved blacktop.

Cabins and Cottages

Most Alabamians have been coming to Gulf Breeze RV resort secretly for years. The resort is located off the island only 5 miles from Orange Beach. Few people realize that the park offers cottages for rent on a nightly basis and are often available when other hotels or condos are booked.

The resort has a Jacuzzi, game room, miniature golf course, indoor pool and outdoor pool. Gulf State Park has modern and wood cabins for rent on and off Lake Shelby.

Tents

The KOA in Lillian on CR 99 offers tent sites. On the Perdido Bay, there’s a pier for fishing and watching sunsets. A fully stocked store, a playground, a saltwater pool and free Wi-Fi are available.

State Park

Gulf State Park sits between Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Alabama, on Beach Boulevard. The Gulf of Mexico is a half-mile walk. Full hookup RV sites are available daily, weekly and monthly in the offseason. Primitive and modern tent sites are available. Free Wi-Fi is available in the activity room. In the winter months, the park fills up with snowbirds. There is a 900-acre lake for fishing, swimming and water-skiing.
