Where the Snake River and Greys River come together to empty into Palisades Reservoir, you can discover the picturesque charms of Alpine, Wyoming, population 764. The northernmost city in Star Valley, Alpine lies tucked in the foothills of the Salt River Range a mere 36 miles southwest of ritzy Jackson Hole--but it feels worlds apart. Camping in or close to Alpine provides an easy home base from which you can explore the area's abundant recreational opportunities.

RV Parks

Alpine has two full-service campgrounds, Greys River Cove RV Park in town and Waputi Village RV Park, 3 miles south of town. You can tent camp or hook up your RV at either one. Situated by the Salt River, Waputi also offers horse boarding facilities. Greys River Cove places you within walking distance of all of Alpine's attractions, including Brenthoven Restaurant, where you can savor healthy menu choices such as a grilled chicken salad served on organic greens.

Palisades

The eastern portion of Palisades Reservoir lies in Wyoming just west of Alpine. Camp on its shores at one of three Caribou-Targhee National Forest Service campgrounds close to town--Alpine, Blowout or McCoy Creek. All three campgrounds provide both RV and tent campsites with drinking water and vault toilets. Swim, fish, water ski or sail at Palisades Reservoir, or take a hike on one of the trails departing from the campgrounds.

Snake River

Whitewater rafting or kayaking through the Grand Canyon of the Snake River east of Alpine introduces you to this natural attraction in a way no scenic drive ever could. After a day on the water, consider camping at one of the three Bridger-Teton National Forest Snake River campgrounds situated closest to Alpine--Little Cottonwood, Station Creek or East Table. None of the three campgrounds can accommodate large RVs, but they do have drinking water and vault toilets.

Greys River

Along the banks of the Greys River east and southeast of Alpine, discover five developed Bridger-Teton National Forest campgrounds along Forest Road 10138. Private and secluded, these less traveled campgrounds feature sites suitable for both RVs and tents, providing vault toilets and drinking water, but no hookups or dump stations. Enjoy access to hiking trails and trout fishing in Greys River right outside your front door.

Time Frame

Alpine is primarily a summer destination, with the forest service campgrounds along Snake River and Greys River providing only seasonal drinking water and restroom access, usually from mid-May through mid-September. Alpine Campground, on Palisades Reservoir, remains open in wintertime, providing a place to stay while you explore the area's ice fishing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities.
