With its pristine hemlock forests and awe-inspiring sandstone gorges, Hocking Hills State Park is one of Ohio's favorite camping destinations. Located less than two hours from the state capital of Columbus, Hocking Hills features hiking, fishing and nature watching as well as designated rappelling areas and horseback riding. Camping within the state park's 13,000 acres is abundant and several options are available depending on visitors' needs.
Amenities
There is no shortage of things to do near and in the campground at Hocking Hills State Park. The campground itself has a swimming pool, and another is located at the dining lodge that offers delicious meals from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In addition to the nine trails within the park, there are two mountain bike trails and nearby horse trails. Archery and rappelling areas are located close to camping, and fishing is permitted in Rose Lake with a valid Ohio state fishing license. Hot showers, playgrounds and a volley ball court are also located in the campground.
Full-service Sites
In the main campground, 156 electric campsites are available as well as access to a dump station. Each site has a blacktop parking pad for motor homes up to 50 feet. Some sites are available with minimal vegetation to allow more room for large RVs. Each site comes with a picnic table and all have easy access to the showers and bathroom throughout the park.
Non-Electric Sites
For tent campers or those who don't need electricity, there are 13 non-electric sites available at the same campground for a reduced rate. They still offer the same amenities as the electric sites, and most are in wooded areas for more privacy and the feel of being in the forest.
Primitive
Located near Rose Lake about five miles from the main campground is the primitive or walk-in family campground. These 30 sites are private and heavily wooded, but lack the amenities of the main campground. Pit toilets and water pumps are available, and camping equipment has to be carried in from the nearby parking lot.
Group
Group camping is available at the outer edge of the main campground and offers access to the amenities of the main park. Groups of two to 20 can camp at one of the four large sites, but reservations must be made in advance.
Camper Cabins
For those who want the camping experience but don't have equipment, the park offers camper cabins. The one-room wood structures are located within the campground and include a cooler, camp stove, cots and a light. There are only three units so it is advisable to call for reservations.
