Michigan features numerous safe trails connecting cities that encourage families to take in the natural scenery or cycle to picnic areas. Healthy families start with the parents, and biking is an easy way to incorporate a healthy lifestyle.
Clinton River Trail
Located in Oakland County, this 16-mile multipurpose trail winds throughout the heart of the county. Linking the cities of Sylvan Lake, Pontiac, Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills and Rochester, this trail contains several points of interest. Riding alongside the Clinton River, families have the opportunity to explore Beaudette Park, Riverbend Park and Bloomer Park. This trail also connects the West Bloomfield trail to the west and the Macomb Orchard Trail to the east.
Detroit Riverwalk / Dequindre Cut
The Detroit Riverwalk runs along the Detroit River and is friendly to biking families. With various parks, cafes and water fountains along the way, families can occupy free time by biking and exploring. The Dequindre Cut Greenway connects bikers to the Eastern Market, Riverfront and Detroit neighborhoods. This urban trail is 20 feet wide and supplies a "bikers only" lane.
Kal-Haven Trail
The 33.5-mile Kal-Haven Trail leads from Kalamazoo to South Haven. This trail winds through forests, creeks, bridges and picnic areas. A family day or annual pass is required for use of the multipurpose trail that runs through Kalamazoo and Van Buren County. The Kalamazoo trailhead is located on 10th Street while the South Haven trailhead is located on Wells Street. Ride alongside the Black River and Mentha Plantation for a scenic cycling session.
Lakeland Trail
Lakeland Trails State Park is located in central Michigan, connecting Ingham, Livingston and Washtenaw County. From Stockbridge to Hamburg Township, this 26-mile multipurpose trail combines rural and suburban sights. The trail leads through forests and meadows attracting butterflies to the diverse flowers. Families can stop for a swim at Zukey Lake or eat at one of the many snack shops in Hamburg Township. This trail is within close proximity to Ann Arbor, Detroit, Jackson and Lansing.
Traverse Area Recreation Trail
The Traverse Area Recreation Trail is a paved multipurpose trail that leads along the picturesque waterfront of Lake Michigan. This trail is 11 miles in length and families have the option to continue riding along the 15-mile Leelanalu Trail. This urban trail leads families along shops, cafes, beaches and tourist attractions. Families should follow the green or red TART logo to stay on path.
