Too often, northern Utah is neglected for the spectacular landscapes of the southern half of the state. With its rugged and lush mountains, however, it remains an exciting destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The cities of Eden and Liberty, sister cities four miles away from each other in the middle of Cache National Forest, offer access to several beautiful mountain hiking trails.

Ben Lomond Peak

Just north of Liberty, North Fork Park marks the trailhead of a well-maintained trail to Ben Lomond Peak Fifteen miles round-trip, and with an increase in 4,000 feet in elevation, this trail takes the better part of the day even for experienced hikers. It is open to horses and bicycles as well as traditional hikers. Another trail in North Fork Park that leads to Ben Lomond Peak, Cutler Trail, is steeper and shorter at 10 miles round-trip. Cutler trail is only open to horses and hikers, as well as skiers in winter.

Great Western Trail

The Great Western Trail, a nearly 4,500-mile long route from Montana to Arizona, passes by Eden and Liberty. It has steep switchbacks that lead to a trail along the top ridge above Ogden Canyon, which is also known as "skyline" trail. With an increase of over 3,000 feet in elevation and at 19 miles roundtrip, this segment of the Great Western Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike.

North Arm Wildlife Trail

Less strenuous, but no less rewarding, is the North Arm Wildlife Trail off of State Route 158 in Eden. A one-mile loop, this trail overlooks part of the Pineview Reservoir. Hikers can see several varieties of birds from this trail as well as moose and wildflowers.

Wolf Canyon

Wolf Canyon trail winds through a thick mountain forest of oak maple, fir, and aspen. It is six miles round-trip, and a 1,600 feet increase in elevation. It is open to hikers, bikers, equestrians and skiers. The land surrounding the trail is private property.

Pioneer Trail

At 8.6 miles roundtrip and with a 1,500 feet increase in elevation, Pioneer Trail is a moderately challenging hike. It begins in Liberty and ends in North Ogden and was used by Indians and trappers in Utah's early history.
