San Franciscans are fit. Tourists can be fit, too, just by hiking west from Fisherman's Wharf on the Bay past Golden Gate Park to Ocean Beach on the Pacific side. Surrounded on three sides by water, San Francisco boasts aquatic adventures from sailing to surfing under the Golden Gate Bridge. Climb the Powell Street cablecar route to Lombard Street, then hop on the car to Union Square for a workout with a thrill.
Bike the Bridge
Rent a bike from one of several rental companies in San Francisco and follow the leader or map to the Golden Gate Bridge for spectacular views and a productive workout. Cyclists have access to both sides of the bridge 24 hours a day, year round. Once over the bridge, pedal past Mill Valley (from M*A*S*H* fame) to Sausalito in Marin County, have lunch and bike, bus or ferry back for great views, a doable workout and memories of a lifetime.
Hike the Gate
Save the $6 (in 2010) toll and hike the1.7-mile Golden Gate Bridge. Start in the historic Fort Point area on the waterfront at the southern base, climb up to the elevated highways 1/101 and onto one of the world's most famous bridges. Visit the mini museum on the Marin County side then cross under the highway and climb the hill overlooking the bridge and the San Francisco skyline to admire the views before heading back. Bring a sweater; the Pacific breezes are cool in mid-span. Walk on the east side facing San Francisco. The bridge is open to pedestrians from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. in winter and until 9 p.m. during Daylight Saving Time.
Golden Gate Trails
With more than 1,000 acres from the Haight District to the Pacific, Golden Gate Park is a playground where eucalyptus trees, exotic flowers and spectacular views meet you at every corner of the extensive bike and hike paths. There are gardens, lakes, waterfalls, museums, a bandstand, Japanese Tea Garden and conservatory along with acres of parks, playground, sports fields and room to romp, stretch and roam.
Beach Fun
Take advantage of the constant winds off the Pacific that keep at least modest waves pounding on Ocean Beach to body, board or boogie surf. The beach along the Great Highway is long and offers opportunities for great beachwalking or jogging as well. From fabulous Chinese kiteflyers practicing their craft to groups making mazes in the sand, there's always something to watch from the windows of the Beach Chalet or Cliff House while you enjoy fresh seafood after your workouts.
Experience Land's End
Hike the rugged bluffs that curve around the coastline north of Ocean Beach to Lands End. You'll get a good workout and see fantastic views of the Pacific and the Marin Headlands across the Golden Gate Bridge. Start from Point Lobos or from the Palace of the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park. One of the bluffs above Lands End Beach has a rock meditation maze that restores the contemplative spirit.
Steps
Residents of other cities take step classes, San Franciscans just step outside. With steep hills and steeper sidewalks from Chinatown to the Presidio, the city tests your cardio capacity and strengthens your calves.
