Big Meadows Campground is located in the Shenandoah National Park with more than 196,000 acres of land. This campground offers back-in sites, tent campsites and pull-through accessibility. The secluded 51.2-mile Big Meadows campgrounds provide a variety of recreational activities for the health conscious. Expect lots of greenery, tall trees plenty of wildlife and waterfalls as your tour the campground.
Hiking
The Big Meadow Campgrounds offer four trails: Dark Hollow Falls Trails, Story of the Forest Trail, Lewis Falls Trail and Rose River Loop Trail. Hikers pass streams, waterfalls and cascades on the four-mile shady trail of Rose River Loop, and walk along paved pathways among the forest in Story of the Forest Trails. In addition, the estimate three-mile Lewis Falls Trail has a steep and rocky terrain. You cannot bring your pets on the Dark Hollow Falls and Story of the Forest Trails.
Twilight Hiking
Meet at the Big Meadows Lodge for a twilight hike. You trample through the trail around dusk, noticing out nature settles down at nighttime. The hike tropically last about three hours. Cost for an adult is $10, and children 12 years and younger pay $8, as of 2010. You should bring a flashlight and jacket for your hike in the night.
Horseback Riding
You can register for a one-hour guided horseback ride along the wooded trails of Shenandoah National Park. The trail ride begins at the Skyland Stables in the Skyland Resorts. You must weigh less than 250 lbs. Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes, and do not bring sandals, open-toes and flip-flops. The rate for a one-hour trail ride is $35, as of June 2010.
Rock Climbing
Enroll in a rock climbing class. Instructors are full-time teachers, EMTs and guides at local colleges. The class is for introductory to intermediate students. Students climb the Little Stony Man Cliff. You receive the necessary equipment and a bag lunch. Rock climbing opportunities take place from May to September ranging from $110 to $135 per person, as of 2010.
Campsites
Campsites do not provide electricity and water hookups. However, sites include fire grates, parking areas and picnic tables. Each sites may accommodated up to two tents, two vehicles, including your RV, and up to six people. Your vehicles have to remain on the graveled and paved roads. Group sites include D163 and D167 and accommodate up to 15 people.
