Los Angeles has more than 330 days of sunshine per year, making it easy for you to get outside and play in one of the local pools or head out on a bike to explore the sites.
Tennis
The city of Los Angeles has several public tennis courts available to help you stay active on your trip. These include both free and pay tennis facilities. There are more than 30 free facilities in the city limits and an additional five pay tennis facilities. Facilities are open year-round. The fee for the pay facilities as of June 2010 is $5 per hour during the week and $8 per hour on weekends. The pay facilities allow for you to call and reserve a court while the free courts function on a first-come, first-serve basis. Many of the facilities feature lights to allow for nighttime playing.
Bike Tour
A great way to see the sights of Los Angeles is on a bike. There are several companies in Los Angeles that provide scenic bicycle tours to take you past sights like Griffith Park, the Hollywood Sign, the Walk of Fame and movie studios. Tours can be customized to your cycling abilities, goals and time-budget. Most tours include the bicycle rental, helmet and a tour guide.
Yoga
Spend an hour or so stretching your muscles at one of Los Angeles’ many yoga studios. According to the Mayo Clinic, yoga helps stretch and strengthen your muscles, and it also has shown to reduce stress and anxiety. There are classes throughout the city for any yoga fitness level, including beginners. Most facilities offer Ashtanga, Hatha and Vinyasa yoga classes. Travel & Leisure magazine rates several LA studios, including YogaWorks, Power Yoga and Liberation Yoga in the top 25 yoga studios in the world. For individuals visiting Los Angeles only briefly, most studios do not require memberships and allow for you to pay on a per class basis.
Swimming
Scattered across the city of Los Angeles are numerous pools and lakes that are available for a swim. There are open water lakes, outdoor pools and indoor pools. Many of these facilities offer swimming lessons, dedicated lap lanes and water aerobic classes. There are 54 seasonal outdoor pools, all of which have morning and afternoon public swimming sessions and 13 year-round indoor pools with morning and noon lap swimming times. As of 2010, it costs $2.50 admission for an adult. Children under 17 can access the pools for free.
Running
One way to see the sites across Los Angeles is by meeting up with the Los Angeles Running Club. The motto of this organization is “Where Friendship and Fitness Meet”. The group does regularly scheduled tempo, interval, hill and long runs at various distances and locations throughout the city. The group is designed to accommodate runners of all abilities. There are scheduled runs on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
