North Carolina has some of the most beautiful beaches along the eastern seaboard. You can stay active and fit by engaging in a number of activities in the beach communities. Swim, fish, kayak, windsurf, play some beach volleyball, play a game or two of tennis or golf, or just enjoy a stroll on the beach.

Cape Hatteras

Cape Hatteras has more than just miles of beautiful beaches. You can stay active and fit by swimming in the ocean, but you also can climb the stairs of the lighthouse, go fishing, hike along one of the trails through the marine forests or go windsurfing along the Salvo Day Use Area. There are four campgrounds in Cape Hatteras Park.

Atlantic Beach

Atlantic Beach is one of the many communities of the Bogue Banks, a part of North Carolina's Crystal Coast. The Bogue Banks is a barrier island that stretches for 25 miles and has many miles of beautiful sandy beaches, including Atlantic Beach. You can swim, walk along the beach, play a game of beach volleyball or fish.

Wrightsville Beach

Located just five miles east of Wilmington, the community of Wrightsville Beach offers a multitude of healthy and fun activities. The wide beach is a perfect spot for playing volleyball, kite flying, walking along the water's edge or sunbathing. Take a leisurely stroll along the beach and see the beautiful dunes, or go surfing, fishing or boating, including in a kayak or canoe. You can play a game of tennis or a round of golf at a town facility.

Emerald Isle

Emerald Isle is also located on the Bogue Banks and offers beautiful sandy beaches where you can swim, snorkel, scuba dive, windsurf and kayak. You can charter a boat to get out on the water. You can ride horses or drive on the beach between Sept. 15 and April 30. Off the beach, you can play tennis or golf.

North Topsail Beach

North Topsail Beach is one of three communities on Topsail Island along the southeastern coast of North Carolina. The community has sandy beaches for strolling, swimming and beach volleyball. You also can bike or walk along the town's bike path or visit the city park, which has picnic areas, a playground, a basketball court, a volleyball court and a horseshoe pit.

Outer Banks

Perhaps the most famous area of North Carolina is the Outer Banks, a large barrier island consisting of several communities, including Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Rodanthe, Salvo, Hatteras and Ocracoke. All along the length of the Outer Banks, there are miles of beautiful beaches for strolling, swimming, body surfing, kayaking, kiteboarding, surfing, sailing and windsurfing. Take your waverunner or jet ski out on the water for additional action.
