Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition that affects the digestive system. The muscles that are responsible for the proper digestion of food do not function properly. This leads to food being pushed through the digestive tract too quickly or too slowly. The end result is alternating bouts of chronic diarrhea and constipation, gas, abdominal pain and bloating. The treatment for IBS can be done by taking a natural approach.

Step 1

Take a fiber supplement. Fiber is a substance that the body cannot break down. It can be beneficial to IBS because it helps relive constipation by moving waste matter out of the colon. A natural fiber supplement is psyllium husks.

Step 2

Avoid foods that cause gas. According to the Mayo Clinic, eating certain foods can exacerbate pain and bloating in the stomach. Avoid broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, carbonated beverages and any raw fruits and vegetables that cause you gas.

Step 3

Cut out trigger foods. There are some foods that can trigger IBS attacks; some of these include caffeine, chocolate, energy drinks, alcohol and foods that are high in fat. Chewing gum and drinking from a straw can also cause flare-ups because you are gulping air.

Step 4

Get some exercise. Exercise is already known for its many benefits to the body, such as weight control and improved circulation. But it can also be beneficial to IBS by stimulating normal contractions in the digestive tract. If you have never exercised, before, start off slow and work your way up. Ultimately, aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise five or more days a week where you are slightly winded. Some examples are walking briskly, walking up hills or walking up flights of stairs.

Step 5

Do some relaxation activity. Being highly stressed and nervous can have a negative impact on IBS symptoms. Partake in some mind/body activities to reduce stress such as yoga, tai-chi, meditative breathing and massages.

Step 6

Try an alternative remedy. Acupuncture can be done to help relieve muscle spasms and improve the function of the digestive system. Peppermint is a supplement that can be used to relax the intestinal smooth muscles. Probiotics can be taken to put back the good bacteria in the stomach. This good bacteria helps with reducing the symptoms of IBS and it helps with the overall function of the gut.
