Hockey tape is a gritty-surfaced, flexible tape that is commonly used to create friction on a hockey player's stick. In the heat of a game, the stick can slide around in your hockey glove, leaving you with inaccurate shooting and passing capabilities. If you have a roll of hockey tape in your hockey bag and are looking for other ways to use it, consider its high-friction and flexible properties, which make it ideal for repairs and decorations.

Hockey Bag Repair

Your heavy hockey gear can tear through even the strongest of canvas duffel bags on the way to a game. If you don't have time to head to a seamstress or purchase a new bag, the flexible nature and strong adhesive of hockey tape can make for a quick repair that should hold strong for a few games. Locate the torn area of the duffel bag and place hockey tape horizontally over the tear so that it overlaps the side of the tear by 3 or 4 inches. Continue until the hole is covered, and then add a few vertical strips to fortify the tear.

No Slip Grip

If you have slippery hardwood, tile or linoleum floors and have trouble with mats, vases and other home decor staying in place, use a small amount of hockey tape to create enough friction to keep them firmly in place. Take care when applying, remembering that hockey tape is permanent and can leave a black residue on your floor. Place one piece on the floor, and then add a piece identical in size and shape to the item you wish to keep in place. Place the item over the hockey tape on the floor for less slippage.

Book Binding

Hockey tape makes for a good, utilitarian, strong book binding when you have a text book or hardcover where the binding and spine are splitting or coming away from the book. Hockey tape is flexible enough that you can separate the pages of the book in half and lay it face down on your work surface. Use the tape to run two pieces vertically along the length of the spine, and then use small horizontal strips to strengthen the spine and keep it from splitting.

Knee Pads

Hockey tape isn't just useful on your hockey stick; it can give you a better fit for your knee pads so you feel more comfortable on the ice, according to HowiesHockeyTape.com. Choose a clear, yet flexible tape. When you suit up, put on your knee pads and socks and then run the tape around your leg, attaching the knee to the pad in a tighter fit. This is especially helpful with children who are still growing into their hockey equipment, and makes for a more comfortable game.

Team Colors

Hockey tape comes in a variety of colors, says ProHockeyStuff.com, which means you can use it to show support for your favorite team. The next time you're attending a big hockey game, purchase a few rolls in your team's colors, and use it to decorate old clothing; tape the name of the team on an old white shirt and use the colors to decorate the sleeves, run a few strips on a baseball cap or add symbols to your pants.
