Tennis is a competitive and recreational game that provides athletes with a great workout. Tennis is a sport that requires athleticism, agility, speed, quickness and endurance. It also requires a variety of strokes, including a backhand and forehand shot as well as a serve. And it requires the player to have a knowledge of the rules of the game.
Game Format
Most tennis matches at the recreational and competitive level are played in a best-of-3 format, although there are some tournaments that require an individual to play a best-of-5 format. In order to win a match, a player needs to win two (or three) sets before his opponent. A set consists of winning six games and having an edge of at least two games. If a set is tied at six games each, a tiebreaker game will be played to determine the winner of the set. Prior to the tiebreaker, player A and player B will alternate games serving. In the tiebreaker, the players will alternate serves.
Game Scoring
To start a game, the player serves the ball to his opponent. It takes four points to win a game. However, the scoring format is not 1, 2, 3 and 4. If the server wins the first point, he is ahead 15-love. The second point would give him a lead of 30-love. If the returner wins the third point, the score is 30-15. The server winning the following point would give him a lead of 40-15 and if he wins the next point, he wins the game. However, if the returner wins the next two points to tie the score, the call would be "deuce." In order to win the game, a player would have to gain a two-point advantage after the deuce call.
Serving
A player has two opportunities to put the ball in play correctly. This is done by tossing the ball overhead and hitting it into the service box across the net on either side of the court. If the first serve does not go in the service box, it is called a fault. A player will have a second opportunity to put the ball in play. If he fails, the point goes to his opponent. If it goes in, the ball is in play.
Game Play
After the ball is returned properly on a serve, the point is played out. The rally continues until one player cannot hit the ball over the net into the court of play. This can be done by hitting forehand shots, backhand shots, overhead shots and lobs. If you hit the ball into the net or past the end line or one of the sidelines, the point goes to your opponent. If you hit the ball and your opponent cannot return it, you win the point.
