Reflexology is a therapeutic practice designed to promote overall health in the body. It is based on the idea that points in the feet and hands correspond to different glands, organs and functions in the body. Reflexology teaches that massaging these points can deliver healing benefits to the related parts of the body. According to AltMD, reflexology helps the body maintain a state of homeostasis, an inner balance that allows the body to function properly.
Theory
Reflexology divides the body into areas known as reflex zones, which start at the top of the head and run to the bottom of the feet. The body contains 10 reflex zones: five on the left and five on the right. Each zone is represented by reflex points on the bottom of the feet. Some parts of the body are represented on both feet, such as the brain, which corresponds to reflex points in the toes. Other zones and organs, such as the stomach, kidneys, pancreas and gallbladder, relate to points on one foot or the other.
History
Modern reflexology is based on research conducted in the early 1900s by Dr. William Fitzgerald, who first developed the zone theory. After attending one of Fitzgerald's seminars, a doctor named Joe Shelby Riley began conducting his own research on reflex zones. Riley worked with a physical therapist named Eunice Ingham, who expanded upon the zone theory and developed specific hand and finger methods for stimulating reflex points in the feet. Ingham traveled internationally for many years, lecturing on reflexology and teaching her methods.
Benefits
Reflexology is primarily used to treat tension and stress, which can in turn relieve and prevent diseases and symptoms caused by stress. HelpGuide.org says that chronic stress can cause or worsen numerous health conditions, including heart disease, depression, obesity, digestive problems, pain of any kind and autoimmune diseases. Reflexology works by dissolving tension and releasing blocked energy in the body. Foot reflexology may help relieve headaches, including migraines, sinus headaches and cluster headaches, according to AltMD. Massaging points in the foot relating to the spine can help dissolve tension in this area, which can contribute to headaches that begin in the neck. A 2007 study conducted at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, found that reflexology performed on cancer patients resulted in an immediate decrease in pain and anxiety. It may also help relieve insomnia and promote restful sleep.
Treatment
A typical reflexology session includes massaging points on both feet. Depending on your needs, you may spend between 46 and 60 minutes in a reflexology session. Some reflexologists may also stimulate reflex points in the hands. The Ontario College of Reflexology reports that the benefits of a single session can last as long as five days. Therefore, the frequency of sessions may vary from person to person. Determine the frequency of your visits based on your own health needs.
Considerations
Reflexology should not be painful. Though your reflexologist will use firm pressure, he should be mindful of your pain threshold. Let your reflexologist know if you have sensitivity or other issues with your feet. If you are diabetic, approach reflexology treatment with caution since your feet may be more prone to injury. Do not attempt to use reflexology as the only treatment for a serious medical condition. Do not use reflexology if you are pregnant or epileptic.
