Understanding is the basis of a solid relationship, but really figuring out what makes a man tick can be a challenge. Whether you're looking for love or already in a long-term relationship, the more you understand about men, the stronger your relationship can become. Just remember that all men are different, and you'll likely have to go through the process of understanding all over again for each man you get involved with.

They Have a Weaker Sense of Smell

If you can't believe your guy will sleep on stinky sheets or walk past the garbage can three times a day without realizing it needs to be emptied, it may simply be because he doesn't have as strong a sense of smell as you do, says Helen Fisher, author of the book "The First Sex: The Natural Talents of Women and How They Are Changing the World" in Cosmopolitan Magazine. A lack of smell power, combined with minimal natural nesting instincts, is what allows many men to live in messy environments, says Fisher.

They Think Differently

Men's brains tend to be different from women's in a number of important ways. When men are stressed, their action center in the limbic system starts working at full speed, which is why men tend to problem-solve when their partners are really only looking for a sympathetic ear, explains psychologist Susan Pinker in Women's Health Magazine.

Information also travels more slowly between the right and left brain hemispheres in men than it does in women, which means men are slower to verbalize emotion, says Louann Brizendine, doctor and author of the book "The Female Brain" in Women's Health. They're also slower than women to process information because they have fewer neurons in the cortex of the temporal lobe, according to Sandra Witelson, a researcher at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

They Use Body Language

If a man doesn't talk about his feelings, his body can provide clues to what he's thinking and feeling, according to Cosmopolitan Magazine. For instance, a guy tends to point his chest and shoulders toward the thing he's most interested in, which can tell you how important you are to him at a given moment. Then, if he looks up and to the left, rubs his nose and ears or covers his mouth while he's talking, it could mean he's not being entirely truthful with you.
