Cholesterol bumps under the skin is a condition known as xanthomas and is caused by high lipid levels in the blood stream. These bumps can vary in size according to Scott and White Healthcare in Temple, TX. Bumps occur mostly underneath the eyes, and in some cases, may be a result of another condition such as cancer or diabetes. Scott and White describes these bumps as yellowish in color, soft to the touch and having very distinct edges. In order to treat xanthomas, it is important to lower your cholesterol and treat other possible conditions.

Step 1

Eat plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains while limiting meat consumption. According to Merck, one of the best ways to lower bad cholesterol levels is to shed pounds through healthy eating habits and avoiding saturated fats found in eggs, meats and whole milk dairy products. Exercise is also important when losing weight to lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol levels. Merck recommends a brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes, three to four times a week.

Step 2

Stop harmful habits such as tobacco use. Smoking inhibits proper circulation and cholesterol break down in the body. Discuss quitting options with your doctor to create a plan that fits your specific needs.

Step 3

Take any prescribed cholesterol medication as directed by your physician. These medications work in different ways to lower lipid levels and prevent coronary diseases according to Merck. These medications used while observing a low fat, low cholesterol diet are effective for lowering cholesterol levels and maintaining clearer skin.

Step 4

Include polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats in your diet. These include foods rich in omega 3- and omega 6-fatty acids, such as fish and other seafood. According to Merck, these foods actually lower triglycerides and bad cholesterol levels. This in turn eliminates cholesterol deposits in the skin and tendons.
