Many women prefer to be as hairless as possible, unless you’re talking about hair on the scalp. Facial hair, particularly above the lip, seems to be a nuisance for women. You can bleach it, but that only causes it to be lighter. Never shave your face, if you’re a woman. This can make hair grow back thicker, darker and coarser, similar to a man’s facial hair. Fortunately, there are lip hair removal products designed to eliminate a female mustache.

Pull-Off Strips

Pull-off strips, or waxing, can effectively remove unwanted lip hair, as well as hair from other areas such as your eyebrows, chin, bikini area or legs. Pull-off strips are sold over-the-counter at drug stores and pharmacies or you can opt to have it professionally done at a salon. Going to a salon may cost more than purchasing an OTC kit. Pull-off strips can cause pain, whether done professionally or at home. If you opt for an at-home kit, follow the package insert directions to the letter. When using a pull-off strip, you are pulling the hair and the root of the hair out, which delays regrowth of the hair. Pull-off strips can cause irritation. Choose a kit that includes a facial cream, if possible, to soothe irritated skin.

Creams and Lotions

There are hair removal creams and lotions designed to remove unwanted facial hair, according to HowToDoThings.com. Hair removal creams and lotions are sold over-the-counter, again at drug stores, pharmacies and retail stores. Using a cream or lotion may cause less irritation than waxing your lip area but use caution. A possible allergic reaction can occur from using hair removal creams and lotions. Before applying the cream or lotion to your face, test a small patch of skin on your arm or leg to ensure no reaction occurs. Unlike pull-off strips, hair removal creams and lotions do not pull the hair out by the root so your facial hair grows back quicker.

Mechanical Devices

You may have seen infomercials advertising products to remove unwanted facial hair. These typically eventually end up in drug stores, retail stores and pharmacies. All products work differently but the basis is removing facial hair by the root, pulling it out, similar to tweezers, according to HealthFace.info. Tweezers can be used to remove lip hair but the process may be time consuming. Using this mechanical devices, pulling hair out by the root, gives the same effect as pull-off strips in that your hair will not grow back for a few weeks, usually three to four weeks. Opting for a mechanical device is still painful, but you will not experience the amount of irritation as you would using a wax-like product such as a pull-off strip.
