New York City is a popular vacation destinations, but the weather is often less than great, to put it mildly. While you might be planning on spending a lot of time in the great outdoors, exploring the wonders of Central Park and getting your cardio on by power walking through the city streets, you’d do best to plan for some indoor alternatives in case rain, wind or cold disrupts your itinerary.
Local Food
Bad weather can be a great excuse for exploring New York’s thriving culinary scene, which includes numerous opportunities for a healthy, nutritious meal. Kate’s Joint is a vegetarian restaurant in the East Village. Many of their offerings are appropriate for vegan diners as well. The Café Blossom specializes in organic fare and includes Kosher and vegetarian items on its menu. Community Food and Juice on Broadway specializes in American cuisine, made from fresh and organic local produce.
Educational Activities
As the cultural capital of the United States, New York City presents a vast selection of opportunities for self-education. Those with an interest in art won’t want to miss the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art or the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Science and technology enthusiasts will have their eyes opened and minds blown by the exhibits at the American Museum of Natural History and the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
Spa & Wellness
There’s nothing like sweating out those toxins and rejuvenating your body and spirit at one of the city’s health spas while waiting for the rain to subside. The Tribeca Beauty Spa offers body treatments, massages and medical aesthetic services. The Silk Day Spa offers acupuncture, in addition to its typical spa services.
Indoor Fitness
Stick to your fitness regimen no matter what the weather happens to be at one of New York City’s indoor fitness centers. The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers offers classes and an in-house spa, in addition to its standard cardio and musculature equipment. The Central Queens YMCA has an indoor swimming pool set comfortably to 84 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year.
City Tours
See the sights from the comfort of a tour bus. Grayline Sightseeing Tours offers heated double-decker buses, as does CitySights New York. Alternately, several companies offer tours by boat with enclosed deck, including New York Waterway Tours and Circle Line Downtown.
