Cleats are a staple of the sports industry. You find them on the bottoms of shoes in golf, baseball, soccer, rugby and football. These spiky attachments provide traction that keeps players safely on their feet, while improving speed and power. Regardless of your sport, replacing a cleat is not a difficult task. Many companies provide change-out cleats, a cleat wrench and general shoe repair accessories in one kit. With the right tools, the best way to repair a football cleat is to replace it.
Step 1
Purchase a cleat wrench for football shoes. Cleat wrenches are cleat removal devices developed to fit each style of shoe. For example, golf shoes use one type of cleat wrench, while football shoes use another.
Step 2
Insert the cleat wrench over the top of the broken or loose cleat.
Step 3
Turn the wrench counterclockwise until the cleat come loose. Pull the wrench toward you to remove the cleat.
Step 4
Thread a new cleat into the empty hole left by the cleat. Place the wrench over the new cleat and turn clockwise until the cleat tightens.
Tips and Warnings
- Examine the rest of the shoe for any problems and repair everything at once. For instance, when you replace a cleat put in new laces and replace loose lace eyes. Select replacement cleats that are the same length and composite material as the original cleats.
