Baldness, or alopecia, is the excessive loss of hair from your scalp, and can be either permanent or temporary. According to Dr. Andrew Weil, a pioneer in integrative medicine, alopecia occurs in more than half of men and women in the United States at some point in their lives. In addition, Dr. Weil notes that hair loss is a normal part of the aging process. Home remedies are available for baldness but they are not substitute for medical treatment; consult with your health-care provider to discuss any potential risks.
Massage
The University of Maryland Medical Center suggests massaging your scalp with essential oils, such as rosemary, lavender, thyme and cedarwood might help to increase circulation. Improving the circulation in your scalp will help to increase blood flow to the scalp and may help to stimulate hair growth. In addition, massage helps to reduce stress.
Diet
Dr. Weil notes that including omega-3 fatty acids in your diet from eating salmon, sardines, herring or mackerel two or three times per week can help to prevent hair loss. In addition, adding flax seed or walnuts to your cereal that contains omega-3 and omega-6 acids helps to promote healthier skin and hair.
Elizabeth Wotton, N.D. mentions that adding minerals and vitamins to you diet, such as magnesium, vitamin E, vitamin B-complex and biotin may help to regulate hormones to prevent further hair loss.
Honey
Honey has antioxidant, anti-fungal and anti-germicidal properties that can help with the conditions that cause scalp dryness and weak roots, according to OrganicFacts.net. Honey can be used alone, or in combination with curd, lemon juice or essential oils to add extra moisture into the hair.
Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto is known for its benefits with the prostate enlargement treatment. According to Dr. James Duke, author of the book “The Green Pharmacy,” saw palmetto can promote hair growth from its properties of inhibiting conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, similar to hair loss medications.
Wig or Hairpiece
If you are insecure about your hair loss or baldness, wearing a wig or hairpiece is an alternative if your scalp does not respond to treatment. According to the MayoClinic.com website, using a wig or hairpiece can cover either permanent or temporary hair loss while giving you a natural appearance.
