How to Get Rid of Severe Dandruff

Dandruff is something that many people are all to familiar with. Some can't even where dark shirts for fear of having someone notice the white flakes on their shoulders. Dandruff is known scientifically as Pityriasis Capitis, and it is caused by the excessive shedding of skin cells from the scalp. Sometimes the causes of dandruff can be psoriasis, fungal infection and even head lice. Fortunately, dandruff is such a common affliction that there are scores of products available for treating dandruff. Severe dandruff is similar to normal dandruff; however, those who suffer from this condition often experience redness and inflammation of the scalp. Severe dandruff can be treated with the combined use of coal tar shampoo and regular dandruff shampoo.

Step 1

Pour a quarter-sized drop of the coal tar shampoo into your hand and lather up your hair. Let the lather sit for three to four minutes.

Step 2

Rinse your hair with water. The coal tar reduces inflammation and slows the growth of skin cells.

Step 3

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 about three times a week. Space the treatments out evenly throughout the week.

Step 4

Put a quarter-sized drop of normal dandruff shampoo in your hand and lather up your hair. Let the shampoo sit in your hair for one to two minutes.

Step 5

Repeat Step 4 on days that you do not use the coal tar shampoo. This treatment should relieve you of your dandruff as well as the itchiness associated with it.

Step 6

Stop using or reduce the number of days in the week you use the coal tar shampoo after the first few weeks. Often while using this treatment, coal tar will only be necessary about once per week after the first few weeks.
