High Rated Camping in Texas

No matter where you go in Texas, there is bound to be some great camping. Texas, the second largest state in the country, offers numerous ecosystems and landscapes over its 268,601 square miles. Whether you decide you want to visit the state's rugged terrain around the Rio Grande or the swamps in its eastern portion, you will find some of the country's best campgrounds.

West Texas

West Texas offers arid deserts and scenic vistas perfect for camping out. According to GreatOutdoors.com, one of the best places to camp in that region is Balmorhea State Park. Situated in the desert, Balmorhea State Park allows campers to relax in one of the biggest natural, spring-fed pools in the world. Campers can also take advantage of nearby monuments like Fort Davis and the McDonald Observatory.

Near Austin

If you are visiting Austin, considering camping out at Bastrop State Park. The park offers camping among its remnant forest called the Lost Pines, according to GreatOutdoors.com. Visitors also have access to swimming and fishing at Lake Bastrop.

Blanco State Park, located on the Blanco River, also offers camping. If you are interested in fishing, you may want to camp here as the Blanco River offers year-round bass fishing and seasonal trout fishing.

Rio Grande

The Rio Grande separates Texas and Mexico. This winding river begins near Juarez and flows toward the Gulf of Mexico, cutting scenic canyons. According to GreatOutdoors.com, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park offers some of the best camping along the river. Located in southeastern Texas near the Gulf of Mexico, Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park is located in subtropical forest, making it a paradise for bird lovers, as well as home to the endangered ocelot.

East Texas

If you are interested in swampy bayous, you may want to camp out on East Texas' border with Louisiana. One of the state's best campgrounds is located in Caddo Lake State Park, home to the largest natural lake in the state of Texas. There are 30,000 acres of swamp to explore. The campground is also popular with fishermen and birding enthusiasts.

Panhandle

Texas' panhandle is a remote, desolate region that offers some great camping. Among the great campgrounds is Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Home to stark, rugged Palo Duro Canyon, this park is popular with people who are interested in hiking and biking.
