How to Learn Swimming Strokes

Swimming is one of the best exercises out there. It is great for cardiovascular health, sheds pounds, builds muscle and is low impact so that it can be done daily. If you have never been swimming, it is never too late to learn.

Step 1

Go to the pool and watch others. There is really no better way to learn how to swim than to get your feet wet. Now, if you have never been in the water and do not know a dog paddle from a doggie bag, it is not recommended you jump right in. You need to be comfortable with the basics of how to float before you get in over your head.

Step 2

Watch swim videos. There are a number of websites that can give you a basic understanding of the principles of swimming. Either through written instruction or video clips, these sites can help turn a beginning swimmer into a novice capable of executing the basic movements required to stay afloat.

Step 3

Take a lesson. This is probably the most obvious, and the safest, avenue to take if you are looking to become a swimming sensation. Instructors are trained for all levels of swimmers. It is a good feeling to be in the water with someone who knows what he is doing when you do not. In the past, you would have had to join the local Y to find a qualified instructor. These days there are pools that cater to those who want to learn to swim.
