Overview

Dandruff occurs when the skin on the scalp is dry and begins to flake off. Signs that someone has dandruff are dry, itchy scalp as well as white skin flakes in the hair and on clothing. Some flaking of skin is normal, however, dandruff is diagnosed when there is an excessive amount of flakes. There are no medical problems associated with dandruff. The symptoms themselves are simply not aesthetically pleasing.

Step 1

Purchase a dandruff shampoo. A variety of shampoos are available including Selsun Blue, Head and Shoulders and others. Some shampoos have the ingredient ketoconazole, which eliminates fungus on the scalp. Selenium sulfide is another ingredient common in dandruff shampoos. The medicated shampoo treats excessive flaking as well as reduces the flakes present.

Step 2

Wash hair using the medicated shampoo. Some people will need to use the medicated shampoo once a week, while others may need to use it daily. When washing, lather the hair and massage the scalp. Do not scrub the scalp. Rinse and repeat the washing process. On the second wash, leave the medicated shampoo on the hair for five minutes, or as directed on the shampoo bottle.

Step 3

Alternate regular shampoo with medicated shampoo. Dandruff shampoo may not be necessary every time hair is washed. Visit a doctor if an over-the-counter shampoo does not eliminate dandruff or if any redness or swelling of the scalp occurs.

Tips and Warnings

  • Women who are pregnant can use dandruff shampoo. Always make sure to rinse shampoo completely from hair. Make sure to clean fingernails where shampoo can build up.
