How to Overcome Generalized Anxiety

Anxiety may take many forms. It can be a small nagging in the back of your mind that at times makes it difficult to deal with certain situations. It can also be a debilitating affliction that closes in around you, making you unable to function at all. The strange thing about anxiety is that often there is really no root cause--it just exists.

Step 1

Work out your feelings. To overcome anxiety, you must locate the source of that anxiety. This may be difficult because, often, people that suffer from severe anxiety have great trouble pinpointing what is causing it. The best way to determine this is to assess your true feelings. Anger, sadness or fear can all lead to a general state of anxiety. Come in contact with this feeling, assess its power and then ask yourself why you feel that way.

Step 2

Take a break. Because anxiety is often so difficult to wrap your arms around, often a simple breathing exercise will help quell the worrisome feelings that are bothering you. Find a quiet place, close your eyes and breathe deeply. Do this until you start to feel your anxiety lifting away. Breathing exercises are not an instant cure for anxiety and should be practiced over time.

Step 3

Meditation is a way to center yourself. With the proper atmosphere, you can release all worries, concerns and stresses. Find a comfortable position, put on some relaxing music and allow your body to expel all the worries and concerns you are carrying.

Step 4

Seek talk therapy. A therapist can help you understand what is making you anxious. As well as being well trained in the art of anxiety relief, a therapist often has an expertise that allows him to pinpoint root causes with little or no help from the patient.

Step 5

Think about prescription medication. Your therapist or local physician may prescribe medication to help you deal with the problem. Drugs like Paxil and Zoloft, while effective, do not come without side effects.
