The skin on your face consists of three layers: the epidermis, dermis and fatty layer. The thin outermost layer, the epidermis, is composed of three sublayers: the stratum corneum, keratinocytes and basal layer. The middle layer or dermis includes vasculature, follicles and glands and is held together by collagen. The innermost layer consists of fat and collagen, which lend your skin its elasticity. To preserve the integrity of your facial skin, it is important to protect and nourish these delicate layers.

Step 1

Take shorter showers and use warm instead of hot water. Long, hot showers strip away natural oils that keep the skin smooth and supple.

Step 2

Purchase a loofah from your local drug store. Use the loofah to buff away dry, dull skin by rubbing in small circles. Don't forget your chin and neck.

Step 3

Moisturize your face immediately after showering. For dry skin, the Mayo Clinic recommends choosing moisturizers that contain propylene glycol or urea.

Step 4

Reapply the moisturizer throughout the day for optimum protection.

Step 5

To protect your skin from sun damage, apply an oil-free sunscreen in the morning and again at night before bedtime.
