BMX tricks have evolved from the simple bunny hop to the 360 airs. The most advanced maneuvers use basic tricks as base moves. The basic tricks are simple to learn and an effective way to get comfortable on your bike. Learning the basic tricks also teaches you how to maintain your balance. Safety is paramount when learning new tricks, so always wear your helmet and knee and elbow pads.
Bunny Hop
You can use the bunny hop trick for clearing obstacles, hopping onto rails and even climbing steps. Start by pedaling the bike at a slow to moderate pace while pulling up on the handlebars. Lean back slightly. Once the front tire is off the ground, pull the bike up while throwing your body forward. This will put your bike horizontal to the ground. As you descend, keep your pedals level, bend your knees and make sure you have enough room between the seat and your groin.
Handlebar Ride
Going for a handlebar ride is when you sit on the handlebars with your feet on the front foot pegs. Begin by pedaling the bike at a moderate pace. First, take your right foot over the handlebars and onto the right foot peg. Next, quickly grab the seat with your left hand, lean back slightly, while throwing your left foot over the handlebars and onto the left foot peg. Maintain your balance by centering your weight between the handlebars and front wheel. Reverse the process to return to your original position.
The Wallride
The wallride trick is when the bike and rider land with both wheels on a 90-degree wall. This trick is good for a beginner who is learning in a skate park. Before you start, you need a 45-degree ramp that meets a 90-degree wall. Start pedaling the bike with enough speed to make it up the ramp, approaching the wall at a slight angle. As the front wheel approaches the wall, pull up on the handlebars and bunny hop. Touch both wheels onto the wall and lean slightly. As you descend, rotate your shoulders and head down the ramp.
180 Bar Spin
A bar spin trick is when you spin the handlebars 180 degrees. Start pedaling at a slow pace riding in a large counterclockwise circle. Take your right hand and put it on the left grip upside down and quickly rotate the handlebars 180 degrees with your right hand. To put the handlebars back, repeat the steps. If you do not spin the bars quickly, you will stall and fall.
Endo
The endo is an extremely important trick in BMX biking, providing a solid foundation for more complicated maneuvers. An endo is when you stand the bike up on the front wheel, while the rear wheel is off the ground. Start by pedaling at walking speed, and slowly grab the front brake while leaning forward. Do not lean too far forward; otherwise, you may go over the handlebars. In one quick motion, pull the front brake hard while applying even pressure forward on the handlebars. This causes the rear wheel to lift off the ground. Hold for three to four seconds, release the brake, and lean to the back, putting the rear wheel back on the ground.
