Shaving takes up a considerable amount of time, with many men and women shaving daily to remove unwanted hair from the face, legs, bikini area or underarms. While obtaining a close shave is essential to increase the length of time before stubble appears, close shaving can increase the risk of skin irritation, ingrown hairs and razor bumps. With proper preparation and technique, however, it is possible to get a close shave every day without these problems.
Step 1
Prepare your skin by washing it in warm water for at least three minutes or by showering before shaving. This will soften your hair and make it easier to remove, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. The warm water will also open your pores and lift up the hair on your face and body, allowing you to remove more of the hair. Exfoliating to remove dead skin cells is also beneficial.
Step 2
Use only a clean, sharp razor. Dull blades are not as effective at hair removal as sharp blades and they increase the risk of razor bumps and skin irritation. Check your razor before use to ensure it is in proper working order.
Step 3
Lather your face or body with shaving cream or gel. Using a gel or cream will allow your blade to glide easily across your skin. The Mayo Clinic states that using a lubricating gel will also help prevent ingrown hairs and razor bumps. If you are using an electric razor, check the manual included with your razor to determine what, if any, creams and gels are suitable for your specific razor.
Step 4
Shave once in the direction of hair growth to remove as much hair as possible without irritating your skin. Shaving in this direction does not produce as close a shave as shaving against the direction of hair growth, however. Unless you have a problem with ingrown hairs, make a final pass across your skin in the opposite direction of hair growth.
Step 5
Rinse your skin with cool water, and then pat it gently with a towel to dry it. Avoid rubbing your skin or washing it immediately after shaving, as this may increase skin irritation.
Step 6
Wait before attempting to remove any missed hairs. If your skin is sensitive, wait 24 hours before shaving again. If your skin is not sensitive, you may be able to shave again immediately, provided your skin does not burn or feel irritated.
