A self breast exam is one way for women to spot early signs of breast cancer. While the exam only plays a minor part in the detection of breast cancer, it is still a useful tool. If a woman knows how her breasts normally feel, she will be more apt to notice unfamiliar lumps during a routine self breast exam.

Instructions

Step 1

Lie on your back, placing your left arm behind your head. Lying down during the self breast exam is better than the old standard of standing up because the breast tissue spreads out thinly, therefore making it easier to feel for lumps.

Step 2

Place the three middle fingers of your right hand on your left breast and rub the area. Use circular movements as you feel for lumps. Massage the entire breast area, from the top of the ribcage to the bottom of the collar bone. Start at the side nearest your armpit and work your way to the opposite side of the breast.

Step 3

Take note of any new lumps or hard areas you feel while doing the self breast exam. Make an appointment for a check up with your doctor if you discover something that may be amiss.

Step 4

Repeat Step 1 through Step 3 on your right breast.

Repeat Step 1 through Step 4 on a regular basis. Some women choose to do a self breast exam every month. You may prefer a different schedule. The important thing is to get acquainted with how your breasts normally feel. This will raise your awareness of any new lumps that form.

Tips and Warnings

  • Choose a time of the month to perform the self breast exam when your breasts are not swollen or tender due to menstruation.
