It can be hard to focus or enjoy the things around you when your lungs feel congested. There are a few herbs that may help you breathe easier during those times. Many of the herbs that can help are considered natural expectorants. However, these herbs represent a holistic and naturopathic approach to improving your health. You should consult a physician before using them for lung problems or cleansing.

Hyssop

It's possible that the volatile oils in hyssop can help to clean the lungs. It has been used in traditional medicine as an expectorant to help chest congestion. However, the University of Michigan Health System reports that its use in this way is based on traditional use and not scientific evidence. The flowers and leaves of the hyssop plant are used medicinally. Hyssop represents a holistic naturopathic approach to health, and you should consult your doctor before using the plant. The volatile oils in hyssop have caused seizures in both animal tests and in humans. According to UMHS, it should not be used by those with epilepsy or other seizure disorders, and it should not be used by pregnant women.

Peppermint

Peppermint contains menthol, which is considered to be a decongestant and expectorant, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. As an expectorant, menthol can help to thin and loosen mucus and phlegm in the lungs. The UMHS states that peppermint is mostly safe. However, the oil has caused gastrointestinal upset and burning in some people. The UMHS recommends that those with heartburn, gallbladder inflammation, liver dammage or obstructed bile ducts avoid peppermint. You should consult a doctor before using peppermint for health conditions.

Mullein

Mullein is considered to be an expectorant. The plant contains mucilage, and has been used in folk medicine to soothe the respiratory tract. The UMHS states that the expectorant action of mullein may be due to the saponin content. The UMHS also reports that mullein is generally a safe herb to use. However, it can cause skin irritations because of the fine hairs on the plant. If you are making a tea with the plant, the hairs should be sieved out of the liquid with a fine mesh tea ball. Although generally safe, you should consult your doctor before cleansing your lungs with mullein.

Lobelia

Lobelia is known as Indian tobacco, and has a long history of use for respiratory problems. Lobelia is now considered toxic and is only used in homeopathic medicines. You should consult a physician before using this plant under any circumstance. According to the UHMS, the use of lobelia for lung cleansing is based on traditional use and not scientific evidence for its benefit. Side effects from this plant can include nausea and vomiting. Weakness, low pulse, heartburn, problems breathing or collapse are all signs of lobelia poisoning, states the UMHS.
