Herbs available as a form of traditional Chinese medicine have long been used to promote men's health and wellness. Traditional Chinese medicine has been practiced for thousands of years and today is known as a complementary medical practice often used in conjunction with traditional or conventional medical standards and practices. However, some Chinese herbs and remedies have not been scientifically tested for efficacy. Discuss use of herbs and herbal remedies with your health care provider before using.
Fertility
Dozens of Chinese herbs are used to increase fertility and treat male conditions like impotence, low sperm count and decreased stamina, states Dr. Subhuti Dharmananda of the Institute for Traditional Medicine. One of the most common Chinese herbs to increase fertility is panax ginseng, believed to increase levels of testosterone, sperm count and sperm motility, according to Shared Journey. Another common treatment involves astraglagus, an herb used to treat infertility issues for generations. The herb is believed to improve sperm quality and motility. Discuss the use and efficacy of such herbs with your doctor before using.
Prostate
An enlarged prostate is often treated with pygeum, an herb that contains phytosterols that offer anti-inflammatory benefits to the prostate and overall prostate health. A wild mushroom known as lingzhi in the Chinese language and reishi in Japanese, is believed to help treat cancer of the prostate, according to Chinese Medicine News, an online magazine offering scientific research and evidence on traditional Chinese medical practices. The mushroom, also known as Ganoderma lucidum may help reduce growth and development of prostate cancer cells by interrupting function of regeneration receptors in the cells, thereby slowing their proliferation. You may wish to discuss lingzhi with your primary health care provider regarding its use if you have been diagnosed with enlarged prostate or early stage prostate cancer.
Erectile Dysfunction
Ginseng has long been used in Chinese medical practice to treat erectile dysfunction, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ginseng is often brewed into a tea that may help treat the condition. Ginkgo is another traditional Chinese herb used to treat erectile dysfunction, or ED, by facilitating blood flow to the genitals. Another common Chinese herbal remedy to treat ED is horny goat weed, a funny name for a centuries's old Chinese treatment that is believed to raise levels of testosterone in males, as well as increase function of the thyroid gland, responsible for the production of hormones in the body. Avoid self-treatment with such herbs until you've discussed their use with your doctor, especially if you're already taking prescribed medications.
