Learning and playing traditional children’s schoolyard games generally starts as early as preschool. A young child can learn to exercise and socialize with other children when playing games as well as develop mental skills. Some games are more physical and should be monitored closely to prevent injury from occurring, but playing school yard games is a great way for children to have a good time at recess.
Red Light, Green Light
Red Light, Green Light is a popular multi-player children’s game played at recess. In this game, the group will choose one person to be “it,” and he will stand with his back toward the rest of the group. Once ready, he will say “green light,” and all the other players will start moving toward him by either walking or running. However, when he says “red light,” and immediately turns around, all the players must instantly freeze. If you are still moving, you will either be out for the rest of the game or have to start back at the finish line—decide this before the game begins. The game continues until a player reaches the person assigned as “it,” and switches places with him.
Duck Duck Goose
Duck Duck Goose is a traditional childhood game normally taught in preschool and primary school. All of the players will sit on the ground, forming a large circle and facing toward the center. In this game, one person is chosen as “it” or the “picker.” If you are “it,” you will stand up, start walking around the circle and tap on the other players' head or shoulder, while saying the word “duck.” When you are ready to choose someone, you tap her on the shoulder and say the word “goose.” She will stand and chase you, and you must start running around the circle until you reach her spot and sit down quickly before being tagged by her. If she tags you, then you have to start over again. However, if you make it to her spot, she is now the “picker.”
Simon Says
Simon Says is a fun game that also helps with listening skills. This game requires three or more players, but is much more enjoyable with a large group. One player is chosen as “Simon,” and will give commands to the group. The rest of the players will stand in front of Simon and follow the commands. If you are Simon, you can say, “Simon says, jump up and down.” The group must then start jumping up and down, until you change the command. However, if you give a command like "clap your hands" or “stop” without out saying “Simon says” in front of it, anyone who follows that command is out for the rest of the game. The game is complete when all the players are out.
