Overview

The Arbonne personal care product line was founded by Petter Morck in 1975. Developed in Switzerland, it came to the United States in 1980 and is today shared through direct marketing and personal consultants. There are many product lines included in the company, and those with specific ingredient needs can look up the product on the Arbonne website.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is one of the active ingredients in their acne treatment line, Arbonne Clear Advantage. Salicylic acid is from willow tree bark and is added to products to serve many functions. It can act as an anti-acne agent, anti-dandruff agent and as an exfoliant, according to Cosmetics Info. It has been reviewed by both the Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, and the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, or CIR, for safety. Both show it fine for over-the-counter usage. As an exfoliant it helps in the removal of dead skin cells. Salicylic acid can also be called 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and is similar chemically to acetylsalicylic acid, or the active compound in aspirin.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a type of algae that is found in many of the Detox Spa line of products. Algae is used for several different things, but in cosmetics it takes on the role of a thickener, an antioxidant and a water-binding agent, according to Cosmetics Cop. Some algae contain plenty of beneficial vitamins and minerals that can help skin appear softer and smoother. As a thickener, it will bulk up products so they do not get too thin. As an antioxidant, it will keep free radical skin damage to a minimum, and as a water-binding agent it will connect with water and leave it in the skin as hydration.

Retinyl Palmitate

Retinyl palmitate is the ester of palmitic acid and retinol and is found in the Revelage Arbonne line of products. It is naturally occurring and is a form of vitamin A. Both the FDA and CIR have cleared it as safe for use in products. In skin products, it reduces flaking and restores a healthier appearance. It restores suppleness to damaged skin, according to Cosmetics Info.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is used in both the aromatherapy line of products and the Detox Spa line. It is a non-volatile plant oil, meaning that it is fixed and not a combustible oil. It typically is used in personal care products as an emollient, according to Cosmetics Cop. Sunflower oil will keep skin soft and smooth, moisturizing and hydrating the skin’s surface.

Titanium Dioxide

Titanium dioxide is found in the Arbonne primer and is used as a skin protector. It can have many different properties, such as a lubricant, sunscreen, thickener and whitener, according to Cosmetics Cop. Titanium dioxide is an inert earth mineral and doesn’t pose a risk of irritating skin. As a sunscreen, it will block both UVA and UVB rays.
