Stretch marks, or striae, create discolored or indented streaks on the body from excessive stretching of the skin. Stretch marks are common in teenagers going through puberty, pregnant women and people who have gained or lost a significant amount of weight. Most stretch marks fade over time, though some treatments can help minimize their appearance.
Tretinoin Cream
Tretinoin creams can help diminish the appearance of some stretch marks that are less than six weeks old and are still red or pink, according to MayoClinic.com. The cream works by helping rebuild collagen, which helps stretch marks lighten and blend in with the surrounding normal skin. There is no evidence that these creams are effective on older stretch marks. Tretinoin creams are not safe to use during pregnancy.
Laser Therapy
Different forms of laser therapy help stimulate new collagen and elastin, which may reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Pulsed dye laser therapy uses nonablative wavelengths of light to rebuild the underlying layers of skin. Nonablative means that the laser does not damage the skin. This type of therapy is most effective on new stretch marks but can help reduce the appearance of older marks as well, explains MayoClinic.com.
Fractional photothermolysis uses wavelengths that cause partial damage to small areas in the treatment zone. The skin usually heals quickly because the therapy does not damage the majority of the stretch mark.
The most effective type of laser therapy for older stretch marks is treatment with an excimer laser. This laser stimulates melanin production to darken old, light-colored stretch marks so that they blend in better with the surrounding skin.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion treatments remove the top layer of skin, which encourages new growth of skin with a higher elasticity. The treatment uses a device that blows small, abrasive particles onto the skin that smooth the surface. A vacuum-like device removes the crystals and the abraded skin cells. Microdermabrasion treatments can help reduce the appearance of some older stretch marks, which are generally harder to treat. You may need several treatments to achieve the maximum results.
