Certain factors such as the sun, dry air, aging and bathing techniques can contribute to your skin becoming dry, flaky and damaged. Even certain medications, such as antibiotics, can contribute to dry skin when the medication affects your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Dry skin can present other problems such as itching and if severe enough, you can also suffer from rash-like patches, according to FamilyDoctor.org. With a few simple steps, you can be on the road to having nice, soft skin in no time at all.

Step 1

Bathe less frequently. According to DermNet NZ, frequent bathing can lead to dry skin. Only shower or bathe when needed. DermNet NZ states that you may sponge bathe folds, skin creases and genitals to avoid submerging your entire body into water. During your bathing time, keep showers or baths brief. Lukewarm water is better to bathe in than hot water. Hot water can pull moisture from your skin and dry it out.

Step 2

Use a mild soap or cleanser. When bathing, avoid harsh soaps as these can cause dry skin. Mild soaps are recommended by DermNet NZ. Purchase pH-balanced soaps if possible to better balance the pH of your skin. DermNet NZ also states that detergent-based cleansers work effectively in treating dry skin.

Step 3

Pour your favorite bath oils into your bath water. Oils help add an extra layer of moisture to the skin, restoring moisture while hydrating your skin. If you don’t like oils in your bath water, you can wait until after your bath to apply them to your skin. Pour a few drops of oil into your hands and rub them into your skin.

Step 4

Moisturize your skin immediately following your bath or shower. When you apply the moisturizer right after your bath, this helps your skin hold in moisture and retain some of the water your skin absorbed from your bath. Lotions and creams work best, according to DermNet NZ.

Tips and Warnings

  • Instead of using a cream or lotion to moisturize your skin, you may use an ointment. Ointments are geared for tougher, thicker and drier skin. Rinse the tub immediately after using bath oils to prevent slippery residue.
  • Bath oils can make your bath tub slippery. Use caution after applying bath oils to your water.
