Dandruff refers to chronic drying and flaking of the scalp, according to the Mayo Clinic. Dandruff symptoms include itching and flaking of the skin; however, dandruff poses no serious health risks. Treatment depends on the severity of your dandruff with milder cases requiring regular shampooing with a gentle shampoo. More severe cases may require medicated shampoos or oral medications. For dandruff that does not respond to conventional treatment, a visit to your dermatologist may be required.
Step 1
Shampoo hair daily with a gentle shampoo such as a baby shampoo or daily clarifying shampoo. Tar-based shampoos and shampoos containing zinc pyrithione used one to two times a week will help soften the scalp and remove flakes from dandruff, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Step 2
Massage your scalp when washing to increase blood circulation and boost natural oil production. According to Daily Glow, this also loosens dead skin cells and makes them easier to wash away.
Step 3
Eat a diet rich in foods containing B vitamins and ainc. Green leafy vegetables and lean meats are included in these foods. According to the Mayo Clinic, a diet that provides enough zinc, B vitamins and certain types of fats may help prevent dandruff.
Step 4
Allow hair to air dry after cleansing, avoiding the heat of hair dryers. According to Daily Glow, heat drying and styling of your hair increases dryness and makes dandruff worse. Hair styling products should be used sparingly, as they can also dry out the scalp and hair.
Step 5
Apply an over-the-counter hot oil treatment or olive oil to your scalp, and massage it into the scalp. Cover with a towel and allow to penetrate the scalp for up to 30 minutes, recommends Daily Glow. Wash out with lukewarm water and a gentle shampoo. Oil treatments provide a deep conditioning to the scalp, helping to eliminate flaking and itching.
