Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a disease of the nervous system affecting the brain and the spinal cord. According to Medline Plus, the disease damages the myelin sheath, or the protective covering of the nerves. This in turn, interferes with the communication occurring between the brain and body. The disruption in communication leads to the occurrence of MS symptoms, and may actually cause irreversible deterioration of the nerves. According to MayoClinic.com, the symptoms of the disease vary among individuals and depend on the amount of damage that has occurred in the particular nerves. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the common symptoms of multiple sclerosis include vision problems, abnormal sensations and muscle weakness, and cognitive impairments, as well as others.

Vision Problems

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, vision problems are symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Blurred or double vision is often reported as initial symptoms of the disease. Red-green color distortion may occur in which the person experiences difficulties differentiating between the colors red and green. The individual may also experience a partial or complete loss of vision. This may occur in one eye at a time and may be accompanied with optic neuritis, or pain, during eye movement.

Abnormal Sensations and Muscle Weakness

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, abnormal sensations and muscle weakness are symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Individuals often experience difficulty in coordination and balance. Muscle weakness may be experienced, especially in the hands and feet, which may cause difficulties in walking or standing and lead to an unsteady gait. In severe cases, partial or complete paralysis, or loss of movement, may also occur. Individuals with multiple sclerosis also experience paresthesias, or abnormal sensations. These include numbness, tingling, or pricking sensations. Additionally, patients may experience pain. According to MayoClinic.com, electric shock sensations may also be experienced and these may occur with head movements.

Cognitive Impairment and Others

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, around 50 percent of people with MS experience cognitive impairments. Individuals often report problems with concentration and attention. Poor memory and poor judgment are also experienced. Depression is another common symptom experienced by multiple sclerosis patients. Patients may also report a loss of hearing. Speech impediments, tremors and dizziness are additional symptoms often reported by multiple sclerosis patients.
