How to Stop Under Arm Wetness
Overview
Underarm wetness can be an aggravating and potentially embarrassing problem, which can be troublesome for cosmetic reasons and can also cause stains in the underarm areas of your clothing. Some people with underarm wetness suffer from a condition known as hyperhidrosis, in which the body produces an unusually large quantity of sweat. If this problem is concentrated just in the armpits, there are therapies that can fix this problem without affecting your whole body.
Step 1
Keep your underarms ventilated. Avoid heavy or very tight shirts (especially when it is warm out) to keep your underarms cool and to prevent underarm perspiration.
Step 2
Use antiperspirant deodorant. If a once-daily application of over-the-counter antiperspirant deodorant is not sufficient to stop underarm wetness, try applying it multiple times a day, especially during the summer.
Step 3
Use prescription antiperspirant. If over-the-counter antiperspirant deodorants do not control the problem, your doctor may be able to prescribe an aluminum-chloride based antiperspirant, which should be applied at night to the underarms.
Tips and Warnings
- Consider iontophoresis. This procedure, which should only be done by a dermatologist, involves using a device, powered by a battery, to deliver a low electric current to the underarms while the rest of your body is immersed in water. This procedure is thought to temporarily block the sweat glands. Ask your doctor about surgery. If you have excessive sweating just from your armpits, a surgeon may be able to relieve this problem by removing the sweat glands from under your arms.
