Vasomotor rhinitis is the swelling of the lining of the nose due to enlarged blood vessels. The swelling stimulates the mucus glands, which results in congestion and nasal dripping. Vasomotor rhinitis is not caused by an allergic reaction. It's triggered by weather changes, infections, environmental irritants, spicy foods and medication, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Nasal Polyps
Nasal polyps are non-cancerous growths that form on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses as a result of the chronic inflammation. Small nasal polyps generally cause no problems and can often go unnoticed. Large nasal polyps can block the nasal passages, resulting in difficulty breathing, decreased sense of smell and sinus infections. A number of medications can be prescribed to shrink the size of the nasal polyps. If medications are ineffective, surgery may be necessary to remove them. However, nasal polyps usually return, according to Medline Plus. You may permanently lose your sense of smell.
Chronic Sinusitis
Chronic sinusitis is characterized by inflammation of the sinuses, the cavities around the nasal passages. The inflammation blocks proper drainage from the sinuses and results in an accumulation of mucus. Symptoms of chronic sinusitis include mucus drainage down the throat, difficulty breathing, pain and tenderness around the eyes and nose, aching in the jaw, decreased sense of smell and cough, according to the Mayo Clinic. Medications and antibiotics are usually effective in relieving symptoms of chronic sinusitis. Surgery may be necessary if symptoms persist.
Middle Ear Infections
The accumulation of fluid, combined with nasal congestion, may lead to a middle ear infection. The Eustachian tube, a small tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, becomes blocked by congestion and mucus and results in infection, according to Kids Health. Symptoms include fluid in the ear, pus, pain, redness of the ear, fever and difficulty hearing. If the pressure is extremely high, it can cause your eardrum to rupture. Middle ear infections caused by vasomotor rhinitis usually go away on their own in two to three days.
Decreased Quality of Life
Mild symptoms may cause decreased productivity during work or school. More severe symptoms and frequent doctor’s visits may result in missed work or school. Breathing difficulties associated with vasomotor rhinitis may also decrease the ability to participate in sports or physical activities.
